Supplements vitamin C and vitamin E do not reduce cancer risk

Consume pills or supplements of vitamin C and vitamin E it does not affect the risk of a contagious cancer, so the latest results of research involving about 15,000 men in the United States.

“After almost 10 years, the participants do vitamin C or E supplementation, we find no evidence that supports the use of both supplements in the prevention of cancer,” said Howard D. Sesso, Sc.D., MPH, assistant professor in the departments of health Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“Although the use of supplements of vitamin C and E does not provide the benefits of protection, the second supplement is also not dangerous,” he added.

Research, which funded the National Institutes of Health and a number of vitamin producers, track cancer risk in 14,641 male doctors who use U.S. 400 IU of vitamin E every day or plasebo, or 500 milligram per day of vitamin V or plasebo. The average age of participants is 64 years old at the beginning of research and development followed them for eight years.

Some 1,929 cases of cancer were found among the participants, including 1,013 prostate cancer. In total, 490 men who consume vitamin E were prostate cancer. Meanwhile, the group plasebo, 523 cases of cancer experienced by men.

Seen similar results in the user vitamin C. Overall, the risk of cancer showed no difference in improvement between the two groups.

“Experiments such as these clinical quickly close the door to hope that supplementation general found that vitamins may protect humans from cancer,” said Marji McCullough, head of nutrition at the American Cancer Society.

Suplemen vitamin bisa persingkat usia

BBC.co.uk-Sebuah penelitian di Denmark menyebutkan bahwa beberapa vitamin suplemen justru bisa menyebabkan kematian prematur.

Penelitian para ilmuwan Universitas Kopenhagen yang mengkaji 67 hasil studi menyebutkan bahwa tidak ada “bukti meyakinkan” bahwa suplemen antioksidan bisa mengurangi resiko kematian.

Para peneliti ini malah menemukan bahwa vitamin A dan E bisa mengurangi pertahanan tubuh yang alami.

“Terlebih lagi, beta-karotin, vitamin A dan vitamin E tampaknya meningkatkan mortalitas,” demikian hasil tinjauan kelompok bernama Cochrane Collaboration.

Para peneliti menyeleksi hasil 817 studi mengenai beta-karotin, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E dan selenium, yang menurut mereka paling mencerminkan
dampak penggunaan suplemen dalam mengurangi mortalitas.

Suplemen-suplemen ini semula diduga mampu mencegah kerusakan jaringan tubuh akibat hal yang disebut “oxidative stress”, dengan mengeliminasi molekul “radikal bebas” yang diduga sebagai penyebabnya.

Kerusakan jaringan itu selama ini disebut ikut berperan dalam menimbulkan penyakit seperti kanker dan penyakit jantung.

Resiko naik

Berbagai studi yang dikaji tim Universitas Kopenhagen melibatkan 233.000 ribu orang yang sakit atau sehat tapi minum suplemen agar tidak sakit.

Setelah memperhitungkan berbagai faktor lain, dan menyisihkan 20 studi, para peneliti mengkaitkan suplemen vitamin A dengan kenaikan resiko kematian sebesar 16 persen, beta-karotin menyebabkan kenaikan resiko kematian sebesar 7 persen, sedangkan vitamin E meningkatkan resiko kematian sebesar 4 persen.

Vitamin C tampaknya tidak memberi pengaruh apa-apa, sedangkan efek selenium menurut tim peneliti, masih harus dikaji lebih jauh.

“Kami tidak menemukan bukti bahwa suplemen antioksidan membantu pencegahan primer maupun sekunder,” demikian kesimpulan mereka.

Tidak jelas mengapa suplemen bisa mengakibatkan efek semacam ini.

Para peneliti menduga bahwa suplemen ini mengganggu fungsi tubuh, misalnya beta-karotin mengganggu cara tubuh memanfaatkan lemak.
